Its impossible not to be skeptical when you hear of a cookie that's made with no refined sugar, no eggs, no dairy, and gluten free. In your mind your thinking "sounds like a cardboard tasting disaster", and what else would you expect when other cookies you've tried, that are missing the same ingredients, have all tasted the same... horrible. Well, I can assure you that these cookies are anything but horrible or cardboard-tasting! When I'm craving something sweet, Nana's cookies come to mind. Now, I'm not allergic to gluten, but I try to stay away from processed sugar as much as possible, and I know that Nana never uses refined sugar and I'm not compromising taste for a healthier alternative.

Nana has formulated a few different flavors, and there is bound to be something for everyone. Gluten free flavors include, chocolate, chocolate crunch, lemon, and ginger, and there are even more flavors in the original and no wheat variations. If you're looking for a treat for your kids, you can definitely spoil them with Nana's. I guarantee you'll get addicted!

Well, I guess I'll start out with a confession, this was my first margarita...ever! (Gasp!) Now, I'm not really a drinker, I've grown to dislike beer more and more, and every now and then I like a froo-froo drink, but I'm not a fan of all the sugar (hmmm...). So I've been searching for something to fit me... DING DING DING we have a winner! I guess I'll make another confession, the first sip I took didn't exactly strike my fancy, but as I sipped again it grew on me and has been growing on me ever since! This is now my favorite drink! Hats off to Bethenny Frankel, who not only made a tasty concoction but also created a drink that won't hurt your waistline. Bethenny chose to use agave nectar to lightly sweeten the Skinnygirl Margarita, which I was ecstatic about since I'm not exactly the biggest fan of sugar. Now that summer is fast approaching, you want to look good in your bikini and wont have to compromise your weight loss with this drink. The Skinnygirl Margarita has the perfect blend of flavors, and isn't too sweet or too bitter... and how cute is the bottle?! If your looking for something new, or just want a healthier version of the classic margarita, you've got to try this.

Kombucha (kom-BOO-cha) has been thought to have been around over 2,000 years, where it was created in Asia during the Tsin Dynasty. Kombucha is, "a fermented yeast enzyme tea... a probiotic, microbiologicalfood. It helps regenerate the bowel flora and is excellent for wellbeing". (kombuchacultures.com) Originally, Kombucha was created for people to become immortal, but that's not exactly what it's used for today. According to Synergy Drinks, the most popular brand of bottled Kombucha in the US, the fermented tea is said to support, "digestion, metabolism, immune system, appetite control, weight control, liver function, body alkalinity, anti-aging, cell integrity, and healthy skin & hair". I have a fairly sensitive stomach, and when I first tried this I was skeptical, but I love it! I've been drinking GT's Kombucha for about 5 years, and every time I drink a bottle I feel cleansed. The drink is also great for people like me who have lactose intolerance, I'm able to get probiotics without the side effects of dairy.

I've been drinking Kombucha for a while, but only recently did I come across an article from The New York Times, A Strange Brew May Be a Good Thing, about home fermenting their own Kombucha, and even selling it on Craigslist! According to the article, many people are against the drink because of toxic substances found in the home brewed editions. So... I would suggest sticking to a bottled brand like GT's. Check out the Synergy website for more information: http://www.synergydrinks.com/home.aspx
Maybe these should be named ThinkGenius because of how smart these bars are! 0 grams of sugar, 20 grams of protein, gluten free & they taste like a candy bar, no joke! If you're not a fan of white chocolate, have no fear! There are 9 other ThinkThin flavors to choose from: chunky peanut butter, creamy peanut butter, brownie crunch, chocolate fudge, dark chocolate, chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate espresso, tangerine cremesicle, & lemon cream pie.
If not, you should be, and I'm not talking about chewing one of your kids' gummy vitamins. Everyone should be taking a multi-vitamin everyday, but because there are so many to choose from it may be difficult. I too was confused about what I should be taking. There are many store brand vitamins that seem "good enough", but do I want to settle for less than best? NO! My mom (p.s. mom knows best) introduced me to Garden of Life Vitamin Code multi's and I haven't used another brand since!
I'm not a fan of store bought mixes because of all of the unnecessary processed ingredients so here was my first attempt at home-made pancakes, and I have to say that they were pretty good!

What you will need:

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 scoop Jay Robb Vanilla Whey protein

3/4 cup almond or coconut milk (I used vanilla flavored)

2 egg whites

* 1 tsp Vanilla extract (if you are using unsweetened almond or coconut milk)

add 1 cup whole wheat flour to a mixing bowl. (I used a locally made flour from a farmers market, but you can find whole wheat flour in the baking section or in bulk in stores like Whole Foods)

Make sure that you treat yourself today, but don't over indulge! I can't lie, my favorite candy is a Cadbury egg and I only get them once a year, so I think I'll have one today ;) other than that I need to make sure that I don't stray too far off the beaten path!
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04132273216781470584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867279530941879476.post-46598297154168600022011-04-22T12:51:00.001-07:002011-04-22T12:51:14.706-07:002011-04-22T12:51:14.706-07:00Quick lunchtime snackWell I'm a fan of peanut butter, but... I love the flavor of almond butter. My snack today was extremely simple and it was around 210 calories. 6 crackers with 1 Tablespoon of almond butter. I use MaraNatha organic raw almond butter. You can find the brand almost anywhere including some Walmart stores! Try this out next time you want a change from peanut butter.
http://www.worldpantry.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce/ExecMacro/nspired/maranatha/home.d2w/report
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04132273216781470584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867279530941879476.post-36077022594546157052011-04-21T10:56:00.000-07:002011-04-21T10:56:56.301-07:002011-04-21T10:56:56.301-07:00Milkshake (minus the milk)This was so good, and I drank it way too fast!
They let you customize your order so you know the exact nutrition facts of what you're eating! This is really helpful because you can plan on what you are going to get before you go in so you know exactly how much you will be consuming.
Hopefully there were a lot of victories! I was very pleased with my eating habits this weekend. It is very hard for me to stay on track during the weekends because I work at a catering company. I have learned to bring my own salad dressing and take advantage of the good fruits and vegetables available to make a hearty salad. I am surrounded by fried, buttered, oiled, and fried again foods, it is so difficult to keep away from it all. I have to remember that while it looks appetizing now, it is going to give me extra calories and push me further away from my goals. Keep at it, and remember that today is a new day and you get to start fresh. Make the right choices and choose healthy treats. Protein shakes are great because you can make them with all different kinds of ingredients. I love having a protein shake for dessert because I know that it is helping to shape a better me.

Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04132273216781470584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867279530941879476.post-75607909535648406092011-04-18T06:03:00.000-07:002011-04-18T06:03:17.934-07:002011-04-18T06:03:17.934-07:00Low in Sugar S'mores BarThis looks so good, I have to check Whole Foods next time I'm there. Under the eating portion of the program, I came across a detox developed by Jay Robb. I've been frustrated lately because I have had intense cravings for sweets and carbs, and this detox claimed to help with these kinds of issues along with many others. The Fruit Flush 3-Day Detox book only costs $5, and you get the book instantly with the download, I figured what do I have to lose?! I bought the book, and was really excited to start the program.

Today I started the detox, and I have to say that it's not bad at all! I've tried other detoxes before and they were less than pleasant, but this one I might actually enjoy! The plan has you eating often, to keep you from being hungry, which was my biggest concern because I hate feeling hungry! So far, everything seems to be working well.

Check out the Jay Robb website for more information jayrobb.com.

Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04132273216781470584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867279530941879476.post-33156211434456613482011-04-09T13:29:00.001-07:002011-04-09T13:29:59.851-07:002011-04-09T13:29:59.851-07:00Counting Your CaloriesACE has an awesome calorie calculator, use this to figure out how many calories your burned during your workout! http://bit.ly/hSwDpo
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04132273216781470584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867279530941879476.post-70308885149408966932011-04-09T12:53:00.000-07:002011-04-09T12:53:06.789-07:002011-04-09T12:53:06.789-07:00Don't Set Yourself Up For Failure!I once heard someone say, " I only run when I'm chased by someone or something", and for a long time I adopted that philosophy as my own. I'm sure there are many of you out there probably have the same feeling, and most of you probably have the same reason. Most people believe that they can't run, they look at "runners", compare themselves to them, and then set them selves up for failure because they expect to be like "them". I've always wanted to be a "runner" because they always made running look easy. I would lace up my shoes, stretch, and set my mind on running 3 miles. Right there I set myself up for failure because I'm expected to just be able to do something without working at it. Running takes practice! I would always start running, and even before I hit 10 minutes I would stop and walk because I felt like my lungs were going to collapse (I know I know I'm a whimp right?). The best thing to do, and I learned this from a professor, is to keep going*! Everyone has the initial pain and burn in their lungs, but that is because your body hasn't adapted to the stress placed on it, it needs time to adjust to the increase of oxygen your body needs to keep going. I now have worked my way up to running 2 miles without feeling like I'm going to die! Keep at it, work at a pace that's good for you, even if you are alternating between walking and running.

*Ask your doctor before starting any kind of exercise program, and if you are feeling severe pain or dizziness stop and call your doctor. It is important that you understand your limitations.

Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04132273216781470584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867279530941879476.post-3413579989669510002010-10-25T13:35:00.001-07:002010-10-25T13:35:03.030-07:002010-10-25T13:35:03.030-07:00Skinny Jeans in 2 WeeksOk guys, I finally took my moms advice, and as it turns out she knew what she was talking about. I've had a pair of jeans in my closet that I love, but I haven't been able to wear them since high school. I was barely able to get them over my thighs, and I could barely button them without the fear that I would rip them!
I decided I was tired of having a few extra pounds on me, and I really want to tone up my body. You need to make sure that you exercise, but you really don't have to over do it.
The biggest thing that you need to do is to change your diet!

Eat as many fresh fruits and veggies as you want, nothing canned because most of them contain preservatives.

Cut out white flour AND whole wheat! Use spelt, quinoa, and rice. I also like to use sprouted grain bread such as Food For Life's Ezekiel bread. You can also buy brown rice pasta which is really good, it has the same texture as whole wheat pasta.

NO SUGAR! And do not replace it with fake sugar like Splenda! If you need a sweetener use agave syrup or stevia. And NO orange juice. I like SO Delicious coconut milk, and they even make frozen desserts sweetened with agave syrup yum!

Eat 1 ingredient foods, this doesn't mean that you can't combine 1 ingredient foods!

Don't use fake butters or margarine, use REAL butter. Your body needs fat in order to burn fat!

Use olive oil, eat avocados, nuts, and other types of foods with good fat.

DON'T count calories, you can eat as much as you want (don't over do it) but there's no need to count your calories.

Remember that spices are your friend, they will help make your meals tastier!
It may sound unhealthy, but the cinnamon bread I am referring to is sprouted 100% whole grain, no flour Ezekiel bread from Food For Life. It is delicious, and my favorite part is, there's no added sugar! Now you might think that I am crazy for saying that this is "healthy" because I put butter on it, but in reality our body needs "good" fat! Don't waste your time buying fake butter or margarine, which are worse than butter itself! I am not saying to use a whole tablespoon, but you can put a decent amount on your toast. If you are trying to lose weight, your body needs "good" fat in order to burn fat, but the fat you should eat needs to be a healthy fat. You can find these "good" fats in foods like avocados, cashews (raw), salmon, and in olive oil. Happy eating!

Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04132273216781470584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867279530941879476.post-34523562416269780152010-10-12T17:58:00.000-07:002010-10-12T17:58:40.891-07:002010-10-12T17:58:40.891-07:00ProteinA lot of women don't want to take protein powder because they are afraid that they will bulk up. Ladies, your body is not going to "bulk" if you only take one serving of protein powder after you work out. It is very hard for women to bulk, we just weren't designed that way! I absolutely love Super Healthy Whey Protein by Dr. Ward Bond. You can find it on nutritional-living.com. It doesn't contain : Soy, lactose, added sugar, artificial colors, flavors, corn, yeast, wheat, grain, or egg. It is very hard to find a protein powder without all of those items just listed, and it is even harder to find one that tastes good! This one is awesome, I highly recommend it! I like it plain with water, just make sure it is blended well, and even add some ice. I also like it with almond milk and sometimes even add strawberries and/or bananas to make a shake!

Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04132273216781470584noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867279530941879476.post-70724083843686712312010-10-12T12:24:00.000-07:002010-10-12T12:24:28.062-07:002010-10-12T12:24:28.062-07:00Buy Local!Helping the environment while eating healthy is easy! Spelt flour is better for your body because it is easier for you to metabolize. The nutrients in spelt are protected better than in whole wheat flour because of its harder shell, and also contains more protein. Spelt still contains gluten so it is not acceptable for those on a gluten free diet. I love the taste of spelt flour because it has a nuttier taste, and would be great for making some sort of breakfast bread with fruit. I guess I will have to make a loaf and find out!

Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04132273216781470584noreply@blogger.com0
